Re-bound in brown calf over marbled boards, new endpapers, second edition, in sound clean condition. A handwritten note by George Cecil Renouard to his niece Annabella James is pasted in to the front endpaper, and is a gift on the 'memorial of her marriage'. An inked inscription by GCR on the title page under the signature of Princess Elizabeth,(daughter of George 3rd) and dated 1858, explaining the provenance of this book. It was a gift from the Margravine of Hesse-Homburg to Margaret Meen, eminent painter of natural history, employed as drawing teacher to the Queen and Princesses. A typed copy is included. A fascinating and unique item in VG condition.
